Website redesign

ExplainiT

Summary

In the summer of 2021, the ExplainiT company felt the need to renew its website. The existing website was no longer of this time; it consisted mostly of text, few visuals, didn't work on mobile and was very slow. Given that almost 50% of the current internet traffic takes place via a smartphone, the need for a mobile-friendly design was very great. In addition, there was a need to develop a new branding.

Duration

July 2021 - Jan 2022

Background

Explainit's primary goal is to train end-users and guide organizations through the transition to new Microsoft Office, Windows and SharePoint environments. The business model of Explainit is B2B, this is what makes them unique on the dutch market. Digital skills are essential in many professions and can no longer be ignored in today's society. This also has a direct influence on the results of organizations and companies. ExplainiT's aim is therefore to educate every digital user in such a way that they can work independently and confidently with new and existing applications. Training programs are tailored to the knowledge and skills of participants, in order to achieve optimal learning efficiency.

Problem Statement

The goal of this project is to develop a modern website, eventually enhacing the user experience of visitors. First of all, the website must be mobile friendly, as that is not the case right now. Second, visuals should tell a story instead of big chunks of text. In addition, the new branding of the company must be simple and at the same time easy to recognize. The old template for a course can be seen below:

Process

During this project, the waterfall method is used. The waterfall method is a way of working in which the phases take place one after the other. One task must be completed before something new can be started. This makes the method clear to understand, yet you have to be in close contact with your content writers and marketeers. The following steps are taken one after another:

Implement

Research

Different stakeholders from within the company are interviewed in order to get to know their way of working, their view on the educational market and to let them voice their ideas about the website. Next to this, a variety of competitors are analyzed to investigate different user flows and to understand in what way the B2C companies differ from a B2B market. Hereafter, a new user flow is mapped out, an ideal persona is generated and lofi prototypes are made. Lofi prototypes from the course template are shown below:

Result

After a variety of iterations, generating an automatic CMS and developing the high fidelity prototypes, the new ExplainiT website was launched in January of 2022. Incorporting a more human touch, straightforward content and meaningful visuals has totally changed the overall user experience on the website. It is now possible to easily navigate through the website on mobile and tablet. The overall conversion has increased drastically, just as the amount of visitors.

The end? As the user experience of a website is an ongoing process, it is from now possible to conduct more in-depth user research. The complete behaviour and flow of the users is now mapped out. A clickstream analysis, recordings and heatmaps enable the designer to get a better view of the way users interact with the website. Hereafter, new prototypes of pages and elements will be generated. These will be evaluated with the use of A/B testing.
